You Gotta Read This!-The Authors Recommendations
July 2007
One of my favorite new authors has done it again! Khaled Hosseini has written his second novel. Read my review of his
first novel, The Kite Runner, on my author's blog. His newest offering, A Thousand Splendid Suns, will transport you
back thirty years to pre-Taliban Afghanistan. Reading the story of Miriam and Leila truly makes one feel blessed to
be born in America, where women are not treated like second-class citizens. The writer takes you through the Soviet
years, through to Taliban-ruled Kabul, right up to the events on September 11th, 2001.
When we dropped our bombs on war-torn Afghanistan, we didn't do much damage because the country was already torn
apart by previous wars. The stories of the strong women in this book are heartrending, but in the end, goodness
prevails. Know that, so that you can keep reading.
June 2007
The Pride of Baghdad is an incredible story of a pride of lions that escaped from the Baghdad Zoo during the
U.S's "Shock and Awe" battle. It is the first graphic novel that I have ever read. I always felt that a graphic
novel would take away from the running movie in my imagination as I read through the story, but this is decidedly
not true. A graphic novel, in fact, assists your imagination and helps the reader to see the story unfold through
the terrified eyes of the animals. This book should rank right up there with Jonathon Livingston Seagull,
Watership Down and The Pilgrims' Progress, as it is a metaphor for our life on earth and a parable of the highest
sort. The Pride of Baghdad is written by the Eisner award-winning author of "Y-The Last Man" and "Ex
Machina", Brian K. Vaughan. In an age of talking penquins and cars, it's not a stretch to believe that lions and
antelope can, indeed, talk too. But in this story, they do it for a higher purpose; they do it to warn mankind of the
dangers of complacency. This is a cautionary tale told beautifully and tragically, made more tragic by the fact
that this story is true. The book is illustrated by Niko Henrichon, and the pictures are at once stunning and
disturbing. Read this book with your older children and re-discover reading.

The Emotional Lives of Animals, by Marc Bekoff, with a foreword by Jane Goodall, is a must read for
anyone who calls themselves an animal lover. And even if you don't, remember it's not really about loving animals,
it's all about respect. Marc lays out an argument for respecting animals in a way that is irrefutable, and never
has scientific data been so easy and engaging to read. Marc Bekoff, who wrote the foreword for my first book,
Hospice Hounds, is professor emeritus of biology at the University of Colorado-Boulder and co-founder, with
Jane Goodall, of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (www.ethologicalethics.org). Marc speaks
lovingly and convincingly of animals emotions and feelings, and discusses how some people, even scientists, can also
feel an empathy for animals that cannot be explained away by science. The Emotional Lives of Animals is well
written and easy to understand for us "lay persons" who are not biologists or anthropologists, but who want to
understand animals. It's like having a friend in the business that can explain complicated ideals in a way we can
understand.
